Prosperity Worldwide and the General Mills Foundation Team Up to Fund a Land O’Lakes International Development School Nutrition Program in Malawi

The General Mills Foundation made a donation to Prosperity Worldwide, a nonprofit organization closely associated with Land O’Lakes International Development, to fund a one-year school nutrition program in Malawi, Africa. Land O’Lakes will implement the program, which will serve a fortified corn and soy porridge to 2,800 primary schoolchildren and their staff each school day, supplementing with fruits, vegetables and milk on a rotational basis. Using five targeted schools as a pilot, the proposed program combines General Mills’ food research capabilities and identified sustainability initiatives with Land O’Lakes agricultural development presence in Malawi and leadership in implementing school nutrition programs. The Local Meals at Local Schools program in Malawi aims to increase the nutritional status of the children and to improve enrollment, attendance, and progression levels. The program will source ingredients primarily from local producers and will also support agricultural production and encourage the purchase of local fresh food.

General Mills funded this project through its General Mills International, Africa Women and Children’s Hunger Project, a program that commits $5 million over three years to needs in sub-Saharan Africa.
