Public, Private and Nongovernmental Organizations Invest $10.6 Million in the Malawi Dairy Sector
Land O’Lakes International Development implements the Malawi Dairy Development Alliance (MDDA) funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). USAID’s Global Development Alliance projects, of which the MDDA is one, mobilize the ideas, efforts and resources of governments, businesses and civil society by forging public-private alliances to stimulate economic growth, develop businesses and workforces, address health and environmental issues, and expand access to education and technology.
The MDDA has worked with alliance partners to strengthen 14 private sector input supplies and four dairy producer associations to support growth of the smallholder dairy industry in Malawi. The goal of MDDA is to increase incomes for rural dairy farmers and participating stakeholders by building economies of scale in milk production, collection, and processing and meeting demand for affordable, locally produced, dairy products. The alliance partners provide investment of either cash or in-kind resources toward the goals of the overall project. As of April 2009, the value of investment by public, private and nongovernmental organizations in the dairy sector has been $10,631,055.
